We finally managed to try the recently opened new breakfast spot 'Proper & Son' at the South Melbourne Market. Located within the food court but also with a street front on Coventry St sits this light and airy cafe.
We took our seats at the big communal table in the middle of the cafe and were quickly attended to by one of the very friendly waitresses.
Breakfast is served until 11:30 followed by a variety of rolls and salad for lunch. The 'Gordon Bennett' smoked trout, mustard and gruyere omelette immediately caught my eye. L chose the potato & corn beef hachecake with egg and homemade HP sauce.
Breakfast was served in individual cast iron pans and looked and smelled delicious.
My omelette was super flavoursome; cheesy, with big chunks of trout scattered throughout. The seeded mustard gave the omelette an unexpected sweetness and creaminess. It reminded me of a pasta dish that my mother used to cook for us at home with smoked salmon and a mustard sauce. I must remember to make that again soon...
L's hachecake was equally good as my omelette, a generous serve of potato and corn beef with a runny egg on top.
We were both very happy with what we had ordered, the serves were big and full of flavour. The staff were all very friendly and attentive, great service.
Given that Proper & Son are so close to our apartment we will definitely be back again and I can only recommend it to anyone who wants to grab a bite before doing their weekly shopping at the market.
